Commenting on publication of new analysis from the Institute for Fiscal Studies on forecasts of poverty to 2020-2021, Chief Executive of Gingerbread, Fiona Weir, said:

“This deeply worrying forecast represents hundreds of thousands of children who face growing up scarred by the daily misery of living in poverty. This damages children’s everyday lives as well as their future prospects, and blights society as a whole. It is particularly concerning for children in single parent families, who are already twice as likely to live in poverty.

“David Cameron has made clear promises to tackle child poverty, but today’s report highlights that this government will preside over a shocking deterioration in child poverty unless it does much more to protect the poorest.

“There is no time to waste. The government must set out the concrete steps it will take to prevent the lasting damage that poverty brings.”
